Hotels can measure some AI-search influence through identifiable referrals, landing-page activity, booking-path events, and a consistent guest attribution question. Keep observed referrals separate from self-reported influence and unknown traffic. A rise in direct bookings is not proof that ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini caused it.
Distinguish visibility from conversion
An answer engine can mention a hotel without linking to it. A guest can read the answer, search the name later, and book through an OTA. Another guest may click a citation and leave without booking. These are different outcomes and should not be collapsed into one “AI traffic” number.
For the hotel, the useful measurement chain is appearance, citation, visit where observable, enquiry, confirmed booking, and completed stay. Some transitions will remain unobservable.
A measurement table with honest limits
| Signal | What it supports | What it cannot prove |
|---|---|---|
| Recorded AI-domain referral | An identifiable referred visit | All AI-influenced discovery |
| Guest says an AI tool helped | Self-reported influence | Precise causal contribution |
| Unbranded query citation | Visibility in a recorded test | A real guest booked because of it |
| Landing-page conversion | A tracked path to an enquiry or booking | Influence outside the tracked session |
| Growth in direct traffic | A channel-level change | That AI search caused the change |
Instrument the booking path
Preserve available source information when visitors move from the marketing site to the booking engine or enquiry form, subject to the hotel's privacy and analytics configuration. Use consistent event definitions for enquiry submitted, reservation confirmed, payment verified where relevant, and cancellation.
Check cross-domain transitions. A booking engine on another domain can lose attribution unless the analytics setup supports the journey. Do not mark every payment-link click as completed revenue.
Add a simple guest question
Ask “What helped you choose this hotel?” at an appropriate point, allowing multiple influences and a free-text response. Include AI assistants as an option without steering the answer. A guest may mention a friend, an OTA, and an AI tool together.
Keep this self-reported information separate from technical referral data. Neither should overwrite the other. Together they provide a more useful picture than forcing every booking into one supposedly exact source.
Keep a fixed visibility test
Choose a stable set of guest questions relevant to the property and record the engine, date, language, location context, answer, and cited URL. Repeat under comparable conditions. Track mentions, recommendations, and citations separately.
Google explains that its AI-feature traffic is included in Search Console's overall Web reporting. Do not invent a separate Google AI booking count from a report that does not expose that distinction.
Evaluate content over a realistic period
Record publication dates and indexing observations, then follow enquiries and completed bookings. Search systems can take time to discover and use a page. One favorable answer immediately after publication is not a trend.
Hilton's AI Planner announcement shows one form of conversational travel discovery. It does not tell an independent hotel how much of its demand comes from other AI platforms.
Use Hotelary's analytics overview and the dashboard metrics guide. Pair measurement with clear public property facts. Report observable results and unknowns together; that makes the next content investment a decision based on evidence.
