How Do You Check Whether a Hotel AI Occupancy Forecast Is Accurate?

Check an AI occupancy forecast by saving its predictions before arrival, comparing them with the eventual outcomes, and testing against a simple baseline at the same forecast horizon. Report error by date type and horizon, not one universal “accuracy” percentage. Exclude information that was unavailable when the forecast was made.

Define what is being forecast

Occupied rooms, occupancy percentage, arrivals, and unconstrained demand are different targets. A sold-out hotel records occupied inventory, but that may not reveal how much demand it turned away. Decide which target supports the operational decision.

For occupancy percentage, define the denominator consistently, including how out-of-order rooms are treated. A changed inventory denominator can move the percentage even when the number of occupied rooms is unchanged.

Preserve forecasts as they were issued

Save the prediction date, stay date, horizon, property, available inventory, forecast value, and model or method. Keep later updates as new versions. Otherwise, the dashboard can accidentally compare the final revised estimate with reality and make the system look better than it was.

Hyndman and Athanasopoulos' forecasting text explains the need for genuine forecasts and held-out evaluation. Apply that principle through dated hotel snapshots.

A small worked example

Mean absolute error is (2 + 4 + 2) ÷ 3 = 2.67 rooms. With a constant 40-room denominator, that corresponds to about 6.67 percentage points of occupancy error. These are illustrative calculations, not observed Hotelary results. Do not call this “93.33% accurate” without explaining the metric; that label hides what was actually measured.

Compare with a baseline

Use a simple method that the hotel could operate without the AI, such as a relevant historical pattern or an established booking-pace estimate. Give both methods the same information and evaluate the same stay dates. A complex model is useful only if it improves the decision enough to justify its cost.

Check horizons separately: tomorrow, seven days ahead, and thirty days ahead serve different purposes. A model can be strong near arrival and weak for staffing or purchasing decisions made weeks earlier.

Inspect bias and difficult segments

Does the model regularly overpredict weekdays or underpredict event weekends? Does it perform differently for group-heavy dates? Average absolute error does not show the direction of mistakes, so include signed error or another clear bias measure.

Review sparse periods carefully. Percentage-based error measures can become unstable around very low actual values. Explain the chosen metric and use room-count error where it makes the consequence easier to understand.

Connect error to an operating decision

A breakfast team may need expected covers rather than room occupancy. Revenue managers may care about the effect on pricing. Decide whether the observed error changes staffing, stock, or commercial choices. A statistically better forecast may have little practical value if it never alters a decision.

IDeaS' total-revenue forecasting introduction provides context for those different uses. Validate the particular use your hotel needs.

Use Hotelary's analytics overview and the hotel-math guide. Pair the evaluation with cold-start guidance and breakfast planning. Save the predictions now; meaningful evaluation becomes impossible if the past is continually overwritten.
